Fall 2011 OHBA Bridge Tour

Coshocton and = Licking Counties

We will be meeting in the= west area of Coshocton. From the SR 16/SR 83/SR 541/Chestnut Street interchange = go east towards Coshocton crossing the Muskingum River at the confluence of the Walhonding and the Tuscarawas Rivers to the second drive on the right into McDonald’s. We will have a mixture of covered and significant metal bridges in our tour.

COSHOCTON COUNTY BRIDGES

We will visit= three bridges in Coshocton County; One covered= and two metal bridges. The covered bridge is the Helmick B= ridge and the other metal bridges are a two-span Pennsylva= nia though truss and a historic pedestrian bridge in= Roscoe Village. Coshocton= County had over 90 covered bridges= and only one remains today.

Turn LEFT        &= nbsp;    from McDonald’s parking lot onto Chestnut Street and go west for approximately 0.2 miles=

Merge RIGHT     on SR 16/SR 83 an= d go north for approximately 0.5 miles.

Turn LEFT        &= nbsp;    on US 36 and go west for 12 miles

Turn RIGHT         = on OH 715 and go west approximately 3 miles going over the Mohawk Dam to two-s= pan metal truss. Drive just past the truss (to your left as it has been bypasse= d) and turn left onto the old gravel road opposite = of County Road 20 and park just before the bridge.

 10:30 ARRIVE    A 2-s= pan Pennsylvania Through Tru= ss over Walhonding River, 410’ overall length, Built 1914 by the Central Concrete and Construct= ion Company of Canton, = Ohio. (Lat 40.35488, Long -82.10525)<= /p>

10:50 LEAVE    =     Turn right from gravel area onto SR 715 and travel east for approximately 3 mile= s to US36

Turn LEFT  &nb= sp;          on US36 and go approximately 5.5 miles to SR 60.

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on SR 60 and go approximately 7 miles to County Road 343 at Blissville.

Turn RIGH= T         = on County Road 343 and go approximately 1.5 miles to Township Road 25.

Turn LEFT  &nb= sp;          on County Road 25 and drive past Helmick = Covered Bridge and park on north side.

11:15 ARRIVE     Helmick Covered Bridge over Killbuck Creek (35-16-02), 166̵= 7; 2-Span, Buckingham Truss built by John Shrake in 1863, Rebuilt 1995. (Lat 40.39333, Long -81.94266)

11:35 LEAVE        from bridge and contin= ue on County Road 25 for approximately 0.5 miles and merge left to stay on Cou= nty Road 25. Continue for approximately 2 miles to SR 60.

Turn LEFT  &nb= sp;          on SR 60 and go approximately 7.7 miles to US 36.

Turn LEFT  &nb= sp;          on US 36 and go approximately 5.5 miles to County Road 495

Turn RIGH= T         = then a quick LEFT on County Road 495 which becomes N. Whitewoman Street. Continue approximately 0.5 miles to Roscoe Village and turn in= to parking lot on left.

12:00 ARRIVE     Roscoe Village Towpath Footbridge over the Ohio-Erie Canal lock, single span, Iron Howe pony truss built in 1872 from other bridge parts. (Lat 40.2838, Long -81.8776) The bridge has been documented by Historic Architectural and Engineering Re= cord (HAER) Survey Number OH-94. Its significance is the bridge is constructed of fragments of an iron Howe truss welded together. Details are very similar to those in a truss in Preble County, Ohio, which was probably a "Davenport straigh= t Howe truss" built by the Massillon Bridge Company.

Lunch will be at the shelters near the bridge. Be sure to bring a chair and pack a lunch.

1:00 LEAVE          by turning LEFT out of the parking lot onto N. Whitewoman Street and go approximately = 0.2 mile and Turn RIGHT to stay on N. Whitewoman Street then continue approxima= tely 0.4 mile to SR 541/W. Chestnut Street.

Turn RIGHT  &n= bsp;      on SR 541/W. Chestnut Street<= /st1:address> and go west approximately 14.5 miles to SR 79.

Turn LEFT  &nb= sp;          on SR 79 and enter Licking County.<= /span>

LICKING COUNTY BRIDGES

We will v= isit seven bridges in Licking<= /st1:PlaceName> County. Five bridge= s will be wooden covered and two will be metal trusses. Licking County had over 150 covered bridges per Miriam Wood in her book “The Covered Bridges of Ohio, ̶= 0;copyright 1993.

Follow SR 79 for 9 miles after turning left from SR 541 to Pine Bluff Road (Licking County Road 223)

Turn RIGH= T         = on Pine Bluff Road (Licking County Road 223) and go approximately 1.3 miles to Frampton Road (County Road 201)

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on Frampton Road (County Road 201) and go approximately 0.7 mile to <= st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Gregg Mill Covered Bridge

1:35 ARRIVE        Gregg Mill Covered Bridge over Wakatomika= Creek (35-45-06), 124’ Span, Multiple Kingpost Truss, Built 1881 and Restored in 1992. (Lat 40.22167, Long -82.23833)

1:55 LEAVE    =       by continuing west on Frampto= n Road (County Road 201) approximately 1.2 miles to SR 586/Pleasant Valley Road NE=

Turn RIGH= T         = on SR 586/Pleasant Valley Road NE and go approximately 1.2 miles to Girl Scout Road (Township Road 225)

Turn RIGH= T         = on Girl Scout Road (Township Road 225) and go east 0.2 mile and bear right at “Y” staying on Girl Scout Road= and go approximately 1 mile to Mercer/Shoults/G= irl Scout Camp Covered Bridge.

2:05 ARRIVE        Mercer/Shoults/Girl Scout Camp Covered = Bridge over Wakatomika Creek (35-45-05), 74’ Spa= n, Multiple Kingpost Truss, Built 1879. (Lat 40.23343= , Long -82.24972)

2:25 LEAVE          by going approximately 150 feet past the bridge then turn around by using the drive = on right. After turning around go back through the covered bridge and continue west for approximately 1.2 miles to SR 586/Pleasant Valley Road NE.

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on SR 586/Pleasant Valley Road NE and go 3.2 miles to SR 79 S/Fallsburg Road

Turn RIGH= T         = on SR 79 S/Fallsburg Road and go approximately 5 m= iles to Rocky Fork Road (County Road 210)

Turn RIGH= T         = on Rocky Fork Road (County Road 210) and continue north for 0.2 miles to “Y” and b= ear to the left staying on Roc= ky Fork Road (County Road 210) and continue north for approximately 1.5 miles to Swick-Holton (Townsh= ip Road 236)

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on Swick= -Holton Road (Township Road 236) and go west approxima= tely 150’ over the bridge and turn left into Boy Scout Camp driveway and go south for approximately 0.5 miles to a parking lot. This is a two-for-one stop as we have two bridges to view.

3:00 ARRIVE        First Bridge: Falling Rock (Boy Scout) Camp Iron Post Truss Bridge = over Rocky Fork, Built 1872; originally constructed over Brushy Fork in Perry Township, probably by the Cleveland Bridge & Car Works; on Aug. 3, 1926= , Licking County offered to give bridge to Village of Hebron in exchange for moving i= t; in April 1927 C.B. Patterson erected bridge on new abutments at the west en= d of Cumberland Street over the Ohio Canal in Hebron; on June 24, 1931, Hebron council voted to sell bridge to Licking County to be relocated to the Boy S= cout Camp. Because of a dispute over right-of-way, the bridge was never used dur= ing its time in Hebron= . This is a very rare bridge and has been documented with a HAER Survey Number OH-89. (Lat 40.17962, L= ong          =            -8= 2.301369)

Second Bridge: Boy Scout (or Rainrock) Covered Bridge (35-45-04), 44’ Span, Multiple Kingpost Truss, Built ??, relocated 1974 from ne= arby county road.

3:30 LEAVE          by exiting= the parking area back out the drive to Swick-Holton Road (Towns= hip Road 236)

Turn RIGH= T         = on Swick= -Holton Road (Township Road 236) and go east for 150’ to Rocky Fork R= oad (County Road 210) and go south for approximately 1.7 miles to SR 79 S/Fallsburg Road.

Turn RIGH= T         = on SR 79 S/Fallsburg Road and go southwest approxi= mately 1.7 miles to Hickman Road<= /st1:address> (County Road 210)

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on Hickman Road= (County Road 210) and go south approximately 1 mile to Davis Farm Covered Bridge on right.

 

3:45 ARRIVE        Davis Farm Covered Bridge over Rocky Fork (35-45-25), 50’= ;, Built 1947, Multiple Kingpost Truss. This bridge is on a Private Drive. (Lat 40.135307, Long -82.301695)

4:00 LEAVE          by continuing on= Hickman Road (County Road 210) for 0.5 miles to Jobes Road (Township Roa= d 246)

Turn RIGH= T         = on Jobes= Road (Township Road 246) and go 1.4 miles to S= R 79 S/Fallsburg Road

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;   on SR 79 S/Fallsburg Road and go 7 miles and merge= to the right onto SR 16 and go approximately 2 miles and exit at the 21st Street exit.

Turn RIGH= T         on 21st Street and go north 0.2 miles to = Granville Road

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on Granville Road and go 0.8 miles to Manor = Drive

Turn RIGH= T         = on Manor Drive<= /st1:Street> (also entrance into OSU Newark Branch) and go approximately 400’ to circular road and Turn RIGHT for 0.2 miles to parking lot on right.

4:20 ARRIVE    =     Rodrick  Bridge= OSU Newark Campus bikepath;  Squire Whipple Iron Bowstring Trus= s, 101’ Span, Built 1872 by the Coshoction Iron Works. Moved from Coshocton  Rt 144 over Wills Creek, Ostego to OSU Newark Campus= on Bikeway in 1998. It has been documente= d with a HAER Survey Number OH-95. (Lat  40.0722, Long -82.445).

4:40 LEAVE          by exiting parki= ng lot to circular road to Ma= nor Drive.

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on Manor Drive<= /st1:Street> and go 400’ to Granv= ille Road

Turn RIGH= T         = on Granville Road and go approximately 1 mile to Bryn Mawr Drive

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;    on Bryn = Mawr Drive and go 200’ to W. Church Street/SR= 16W ramp

Turn RIGH= T         = on W. Church Street/SR 16W ramp and continue on SR 16W for 4 miles to SR 37 and continuing straight on SR 37 for approximately 4 miles to Johnstown-Alexand= ria Road/SR37 exit (SR 161 continues straight)

Turn RIGH= T         = on Johnstown-Alexandria Road/SR37 and go approximately 0.8 miles to Fireman’s Park on the left.

Turn LEFT=         &= nbsp;   into Fireman’s Park and park in parking lot.
